I'm always looking for ways to make my curriculum more dynamic, provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and provide opportunities of real-life exposure to my low functioning students whom may otherwise not get the opportunitiy. Are there suggestions for field trips that would tie into the monthly themes? I teach mostly 18-22 and have a few 15/16 year olds (high school 7 transition curriculum) |

Hi Judy, The Job Club (Lessons 17-21) activities within the Transition grade band provide much opportunity to expand the monthly topic by visiting places in the community, as well as participating in volunteer activities. Depending on your local community, there may be a variety of jobs/activities that could be accessible for your students to participate. In September, Lesson 21 - Volunteering Jobs, suggests volunteering to help a club/organization with a fundraising event. Not only does an exercise like this expand on the monthly topic, it is a great opportunity to build positive relationships with community members while exposing your young adults to participate in community clubs and organizations. Suggestions for these types of activities and experiences are usually contained within the lesson plan of the activity. The Transition Passport also has many support documents for these Job Club activities. Using the Volunteer Activity Review, Classroom Vocational Activities and Job Tours sections within the Transition Passport aides team members in recalling and discussing events, and also helps in building a personal binder with transitional experiences and skills. It is always wonderful to hear about these classroom experiences. We welcome you to share any activities or field trips of your Transition classroom in the future. I hope you find this information helpful, Amanda |
